Amazon.com Product Description
Metro 2033 is a single player first-person shooter (FPS) that incorporates role-playing game (RPG) elements. Based on the best selling novel of the same name by Dmitry A. Glukhovsky, it tells the story of humanity's struggle for survival in the forgotten tunnels of Moscow's underground subway system following a devastating nuclear war. Features include mission play combining a unique mix of firearm and melee combat, an economy revolving around ammo and items and an experience system which takes each of your actions into account, leading to a variety of possible alternate endings and extended replay value. Story The apocalypse came by our own making, with a single blinding flash, followed by a firestorm of sheer flame. It took just an hour and a half to wipe out 3.5 billion people and 10,000 years of civilization, plunging humanity into a hopeless Dark Age. In the aftermath, survivors in Moscow moved underground and slowly organized into small socially and politically independent tribes, clustered around the city's deep, subway stations. The young man, Artyom is among them. A member of the first generation of children raised in the subterranean world following the apocalypse, he has only the vaguest recollections of life above ground, and contact with other humans beyond those that inhabit his local station, "Exhibition," but he will have to face new experiences with both if humanity is to survive. Mutated beasts known as "Dark Ones" are spreading throughout the isolated stations of the Metro, and Artyom has been chosen as the messenger to spread the news of the new peril. Become humanity’s last savior and uncover the truth behind the horrors that await in Moscow’s underground. View larger. | Gameplay Metro 2033 is a single player, FPS that also incorporates RPG elements. Action played out in the role of young Artyom, is mission-based and because the game is based on the Glukhovsky novel, the storyline veers away from the anti-Russian stance that is often seen in post-apocalyptic stories and video games. Here the Russian characters are humanity, and fight every day against the terrors that nuclear war has wrought. These terrors come mostly in the form of mutants known as "Homo Novus," who have invaded the Underground, as well as frightening alien-like paranormal creatures that haunt the gameworld. The game hero, Artyom, has a certain immunity to the latter and a talent for dispatching the former, which together make him a very popular choice to be sent on missions. Combat throughout utilizes a mixture of improvised firearms and melee weapons. Balancing the use of these two is important because in this world of violence and scarcity, ammunition plays the duel role of protection and commodity. Throughout the game players will use ammo as much to purchase items and upgrades at different stations visited, as they will use it in combat. In addition, the choices made by players throughout the game register as "Enlightenment Points," or the lack of them. Accumulated totals of these register as a variety of constructs such as curiosity, kindness and prejudice resistance that can and will lead to alternative story endings. Together with its unique inventory management system, engrossing storyline and replay value based on morality, Metro 2033 is sure to be a game not to be missed by FPS and RPG players alike. Key Game Features - Menacing Atmosphere – Incorporating shadows, ambient sounds, lighting effects and claustrophobic scenes to create feeling of tension and fear

- Diversity of Combat – Combat is brutal and intense, fought with improvised weapons or hand to hand in the half shadows.
- Enlightenment Points – Proprietary engine takes into account your actions and analyzes them (curiosity, kindness, prejudice resistance) leading to alternative story endings.

| Customer Reviews: Decent Game! July 24, 2010 TAZ A (NEW YORK) When I first got the game I thought it was a bit lame but it grew on me. I then felt the urge to continue playing it. The graphics are not top of the line, there are camera issues and the monsters sometimes sound a bit cheesy but it's a decent game. It reminded me of the first F.E.A.R. except with Russians, Nazis and mutant creatures. It's worth checking out especially if you can get it for a cheap price.
Amazon won't post this if I used the title I really want to use July 21, 2010 J. Romeo (knoxville, tn USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a horrible, horrible game. I consider myself a good writer. It was my major in college (If anyone out there is hiring technical writers give me a shout.)However, I don't know the right words to describe how sub-par this game turned out.
At time the game is nothing more than following someone down a corridor. Other times you're running around with no clue as to what you are suppose to be doing. You have a compass, but that thing is as worthless as the ammunition in this game. It's frustrating having to do the same level time-and-time again, because you have no idea what's going on. The majority of the time the gamer is forced to guess what he/she is suppose to do next. Most times you'll die before knowing what you're suppose to do.
At least the creators were honest; your bullets won't stop a thing. They tell you that the prewar bullets are much better, but don't use them because it's like spening money. You're forced to use them. There's no way around it.Maybe if there was an aiming system, other than red triangles, you might take something down in a few shots. If there is an aiming system, other than those red triangles, it's horrible. The grenades that you get, which are the same that enemy is using, won't kill a thing. Be warned- those same grenades that the enemy uses will take you out every time.
I like atmosphere in games, but pitch black is not atmosphere. It's called playing in the dark. You eventually get some night vision goggles, but you can't see too much in front of you. You're forced to look down at the ground the whole time or take them off every now and then to see where you are heading.
There is no save feature in the game other than getting to a check point. Only being able to save at check points or when the chapter is over is what we had to do back in the PS1 days. There's no reason on today's system not to be able to save a game whenever or where ever you like. The developers chose the worst areas for check points. One of my checkpoints was right in front of a guy firing directly at me. So, every time that I died I would start right in front of the guy shooting at me. Who thought that this was a good place for a check point? Someone at that company needs their head checked.
Where were the RPG elements that the game was suppose to have? You can't interact with any of the NPC beyond standing in front of them and listening to what they say. I don't call that an RPG element. I call that a normal video game. The developers also tried to put a little stealth into the game. They failed miserably. Your weapons can't stop the NPC in the game. The silenced hand guns only work after a couple of shots and by then everyone knows where you are. Even if they don't see you they know where you are. Now you have to fight a lot of NPC with nothing more than BBs.
It's no wonder why we gamers will play games that have numbers after them. We know what we are getting. Sure, there wasn't too much difference between Modern Warfare 1 and 2, but we knew we were going to get a fun, solid game (not counting the glitch filled he!! that the online turned out to be. Metro 2033 was not fun in the least bit. If you like the post-apocalyptic theme keep your money for Fallout 4. I'm not trying to compare the two games, but at least we know that FO 4 will be worth the money.
Rent this if you have to play the game, but please save your money for something else.
Somewhat Unbalanced Effort June 23, 2010 Libertarian! (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Metro 2033 is based on a Russian novel dealing with life in post-apocalyptic Moscow, brought to you by members of the team that gave us S.T.A.L.K.E.R. And while the game has the same bleak atmosphere of their original major release, it avoids the major technical bugs it had.
In Metro 2033, after the apocalypse, Russians live in the underground metro stations as the surface is totally irradiated and impossible to deal with without gas masks. You are set to seek help for your beleaguered station and are tasked with delivering a message seeking help. In your journey, you must face the mutants and assorted supernatural entities that now populate Moscow.
The game is a rather linear affair. You are only really able to go one direction and you have few options for exploration. There are usually two ways to handle an area: stealth or run-and-gun. It seems to rely heavily upon linear design with the occasional big set piece...but the big set pieces are not exactly riveting.
A huge set piece where you fight the same enemy repeatedly for the rest of the level loses most of its impact. The guns seem underpowered against mutants...horribly so. The mutants tend to be bullet sponges, which makes mutant swarms situations where you must be tight with your allies because, unlike you, their guns tend to take them down.
Your weaponry is really effective against humans. You get the usual weaponry, except with the addition of pneumatic weapons which, while slow due to the need to pump up the air tank, can hit with tons of impact. Grenades are nearly impossible to use effectively as the AI, for its assorted flaws, is really good at getting out of their way.
The economy is based on trading military grade ammo, which is more powerful than the much more prolific dirty ammo you normally use. Its a conceit that never seems to have a major bearing on the game as the gun most useful for an area can usually be looted early in the area. One huge problem, though, is that you are not really advised how the system works. My first visit to a market was baffling to me.
The gameplay is less than stellar...but the atmosphere is really good. You feel like you are in a nearly hopeless situation, fighting forces you barely comprehend. The outdoors are irradiated, devastated, and laden with mutants who can effectively kill you with ease. Anytime you go outside, you are required to wear a gas mask. Only problem is that you get attacked by mutants and the gas mask isn't invincible. Plan on swapping them with ones from corpses regularly. The NPCs act as you would expect most people to behave, but anytime you are given an ally for a mission, they seem to almost be Messiahs, which hurts the reality quotient a bit. Basically, it seems they wanted to make you Gordon Freeman...but, instead, made you normal and made everybody else Gordon.
Metro 2033 is a solid title, but not one of the elite FPS out there. It's not bad, but I cannot state that there aren't many games with better mechanics out there.
Very Underrated! June 19, 2010 Aaron Dusenberry 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I almost didn't purchase this game based on the reviews I read here even though I had been looking forward to it's release since the first screenshots. When the price went down 10.00 i figured why not? I wasn't disapointed and really have no idea what these people are wining about. No it is not Fallout 3 and it is not meant to be. The way I see it it is a sort of mix between the Fear FPS games, Resident Evil and Bioshock, three of my favorite series. The atmosphere is dark and bleak, but for some reason I did not find it depressing, just atmospheric in the way Bioshock was atmospheric. This is a world hanging on the brink and the developers really captured that feeling well.
Honestly I'm glad you don't have to interact with every NPC and go on fetch quests. This game is about surviving in extreme conditions and being smart with the way you use ammo and fight the enemies. The graphics are really top notch, some of the best FPS graphics I have seen thus far on 360 and right up there with Modern Warfare etc. Granted it's completely different as you are underground most of the time, but I really dug the graphical style as well as the sound. If you have 5.1 you are in for a treat, as this is one of the better uses of 5.1 I have seen on the 360, sort of like Dead Space. So all in all a great purchase and the campaign lasted me around 14 hours the first time through on normal. I will def be going back to try it again on hard, which is a sign I won't be selling this to EB anytime soon. So give it a chance if you like the genre, there really isn't anything else on the horizon and it will tide you over until some of the other big releases hit.
Metro 2033 June 17, 2010 Alice Gets Fragged 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is the year 2033 (no kidding!) and you are one of the remaining citizens of Moscow, who now dwell in the Metro (you don't say!) after the apocalypse. I'm always up for a good post-apocalyptic story, and the Moscow Metro is certainly a new take on that. The stations you pass through during Artyom's quest are well-designed with little details like teddy bears and comic books, the frozen surface world they've created seems entirely plausible and chillingly creepy, and fighting Nazis and Communists is an interesting nod to history. The story starts slowly and you spend a lot of the first couple of levels just walking around, but later on the game picks up speed.
There are touches of the supernatural throughout this game (Anomaly being the most obvious example) and if you don't explore much then you'll miss the weird little subplot about the Dark Ones.
The game world isn't particularly free - you're told where to go and what to do at each step, which I guess is good if you're into taking orders, but not so good if you want a chance to mess around. There are times where you get to play freely, more so in the later levels.
Quite often you have the option of running away or sneaking past rather than having to do any fighting. I'm more of a "blast the crap out of everything" kind of girl and this game is not really designed for that, but if you're into subtlety, you might enjoy it more than I did.
Having to worry about lights and masks is rather irritating to those of us who just want ACTION!, but I suppose it adds a touch of realism and it's not exactly THAT difficult to manage.
Checkpoints are very frequent, which is nice, and the levels are generally short, but you do tend to get swarmed during battles and reloading is frequent and rather slow. Plus, when you switch to a gun it doesn't load automatically, so you have to be sure to load before you even start fighting, so while surprise battles are not that common, they can be frustrating.
I also found the lack of a map to be troublesome, but that's just because I'm directionally challenged. You get a compass pointing to your objective and there usually aren't a lot of other directions in which you can go, so anyone who's not me will probably do just fine.
As far as I can see, the game only has a campaign (single-player) mode, so once you've finished that... you've finished. I think it took me around twenty hours, maybe, all told. Not very long.
If you're into post-apocalyptic worlds, play Fallout 3. If you're into killing stuff, play Modern Warfare 2. If you've finished both, Metro 2033 may be worthwhile. This game is like a fusion of both but isn't as good as either of them.
