 Good GPS, but bad map July 21, 2010

This is my first Tomtom. I own a Garmin GPS which I bought a few years ago.
What I like about this device:
1. Good GPS reception. The device shows 4 or 5 satellites even inside my home. My old Garmin would lose satellite reception when driving on side roads with a lot of trees.
2. Large screen. I like the large screen so that I don't have to deal with small buttons.
What I don't like about this device:
1. Low map quality. When I typed in my home address into this device, the location shown on the device is 400 ft away from my home. On my first driving test with this device, a side street that is on the west side of a main road is shown on the east side of the main road on the GPS map. Fortunately I ignored the GPS and followed the street sign. It seems that the map quality is worse than the map quality on my old Garmin.
2. Lack of documentation. The package comes with a very brief user's guide. A more detailed reference document would be helpful in understanding all the features available in this device.

TomTom say they'd sell this for $239, with lifetime maps, but it is out of stock. So, how did Amazon get any? And why does Amazon charge $40 more?
Now, to the product. It is Large, it is bright, it is intuitive. I'm replacing a TomTom 910 World GPS, and this one is easier to use. I've used it in the USA, but will go to Europe in a few weeks. I'm sure it will be great there, because the 910 was, too.
The window mount is OK, simpler than the 910's but not much easier. I'll try a dash mounted or beanbag mounting, next.

Instructions are not user friendly and are incomplete. It was necessary to call customer service six times until I received correct answers to my questions. After contacting customer service by e-mail, it took two days to get a reply and they did not address my questions. With regard to the device, the speech component was confusing when driving in Europe since the names of cities, towns, and roads were usually mispronounced and unintelligible.

I used the TomTom Software on my smartphone for 7 years. My smartphone has 195MHz only and I liked the TomTom navigation on it.
When I ordered the TomTom XXL 540S WTE I expected something much better than my old smartphone. I was really disappointed about this device. I used it for 20 days in the Los Angeles / Orange County area and returned it because it was so bad.
While entering adress there are big delays. Sometimes it tells you to turn right after you passed the road already. When you left the route it takes up to 40 seconds until it tells you the new route.
The voice commands are bad. E.g. you drive on a road with three lanes, at the end of the road you have to turn left. The device tells you all the time to keep right and a few yards before you reached the end of the road is suddely tells you to turn left. Now get over three lanes in high traffic. This happened always when I drove this road!
The lane recognition is not as helpful as I expected.
The TomTom support was really bad. My first Map update failed, I wasn't able to restart the update. I contacted TomTom support and it took them almost a week to answer. The answer wasn't helpful. In the meanwhile I found a menue in the TomTom software where you see all downloaded data. From there I could restart the update to teh device.
You have to use the POI's provided by TomTom. Most of them are out o date.
Furthermore TomTom should provide a case in their package as everybody needs it.
All in all I was highly disappointed about this device and returned to my old smartphone which I put in the cabinet for "retirement" already.

Right out of the box we used the TomTom XXL 540S World Traveler to navigate us through 3,000 km of driving in Germany and the Czech Republic. The directions were flawless, the points of interest accurate and plentiful and the operation of the device was quick and easy. Even in the smallest towns we were able to get around twisting and narrow one-way and limited access streets without trouble. The speed limit monitoring feature was absolutely accurate and kept me out of trouble. Forget the paper maps - no one should attempt to drive around Europe without this outstanding GPS device. But wait, there is more! It also covers the US, Canada and Mexico! Have a great time and leave the directions to TomTom, you will never get lost.
